It’s easy to be tempted to go through life competing with everyone around us. When we see someone who’s more talented, better looking or has more gifts, instead of running our race and being comfortable with who we are, oftentimes we feel inferior and think, “I’ve got to catch up to them.” The problem with this unhealthy competition is that it’s a never-ending cycle.

There will always be someone ahead of us. But, it’s a very freeing thing when you realize, “I’m not competing with you. I don’t have to have as big a house as my neighbor to feel good about myself. I don’t have to keep up with my co-worker. I don’t have to be a certain size. No, I understand that I’m not in competition with my friend, my neighbor or my co-worker. Instead, I’m going to be the best me that I can possibly be.” Friend, that’s an attitude God can work with. When you focus on being who God made you to be, that’s when you’ll rise up higher and position yourself for every spiritual blessing He has in store for you!

My friend, John “Freddie Newton” Gillespie has the amazing God-given gift of writing.  He noticed he had a talent for writing in the 1st grade when he first started to write rap songs.  As he matured, his raps became true spoken word poetry and every since then he’s been using his writing to glorify God and express himself. This piece that he has written was performed at True Life Church in Newark, DE and was written as an interlude for the song, "Come to Jesus" originally performed by Planetshakers.

Letter to the Church

Dear church,

Please forgive me for I am a sinner.

My faith sways like a child’s swings on a summer evening.

Although my smile remains gleaming and my love is beyond reason.

I still change with the seasons and walk brave through the flames.

Chained to the names that Satan gave me.

Dear Church,

I am a sinner.

I pretend I have the answers.

My answers create question and these questions become my obsession.

Lord, Am I being tested?

Am I dancing with the devil under midnight stars?

Romancing with a lantern believing I have the light, but really living in the dark.

Dear Church,

I am a sinner.

I could sing and cheer with you, my soul is still ugly.

I could shed a tear with you, but still feel nothing.

I could share my fears with you, but then you might judge me.

I just want to hear the bible say that  it loves me.

I just want the Christians to say that their loves free.

Because life is so rough and love is so comfy.

Dear Church,

I am a sinner.

So how can God want me?

"For all have sinned, and fall short of Glory."

So I wrote this as a page in my story

and shouted it off the mountaintops so no one we’ll ignore me.

Dear Church,

I am a man seeking the truth.

We are all sinners.

Lord, let me be new.

Lord, I come to you.

Lord, let me be new.

We are all sinners.

Let us all come to you

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5, NIV).

Are you facing a situation that seems like it has no logical solution? Sometimes we have to turn our minds off, stop trying to figure it all out, and stop overanalyzing and researching everything. When you don’t see the answer in the natural realm, it’s time to stop leaning on your own understanding and choose to trust God.

Sometimes our minds can be a distraction to our “inner sensor.” Our minds can allow fear and dread to distract us from what God is speaking to our hearts. That’s why the Scripture says that we aren’t to lean on our own understanding. We have to take time to shut off the distractions, shut off fear, and listen to what’s going on inside of us where God speaks. That’s where faith rises up. That’s where all of the sudden you’ll feel a spark of hope even when things look impossible.

Today, no matter what it looks like in the natural, choose to lean on Him. Trust that He has favor in store for your future. Trust that something good is about to happen. As you lean on Him with your mind, soul and strength, you’ll see His goodness and break through to new levels in every area of your life!
